A single-crystal turbine blade contains just one grain. Researcher Zhang Jian of the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, explains that the essence of single-crystal blade manufacturing lies in the word "precision": through directional solidification — a highly demanding process — the crystal is made to grow along a single direction, requiring precise control over multiple variables including ceramic cores, shell molds, and temperature fields. Any deviation in any stage can scrap the blade.
It is precisely this pursuit of process limits that makes the single-crystal blade a benchmark of a nation's advanced manufacturing capability. As China's directional solidification equipment and processes keep advancing, the yield of complex hollow-cored single-crystal blades continues to improve, providing solid support for the development of advanced aero propulsion systems.
